Confidence in God

July 10, 2010

Read Matthew 10:16-20; Mark 16:15-20 (NIV)

We have read –and heard- wonderful accounts of the history of our nation, the brave men and women who did their part, and the overarching role that our Lord and Savior had in it. And just as He is, was and ever shall be so will His role in our country and its history continue.

Today we are on the eve of celebrating/commemorating/engaging the lives and works of brave men and women who do their part by travelling to other countries to preach the gospel. They are not as brave in their own right, but brave through their confidence in God.

I remember being in Botswana, Africa, where my husband was dean and principle instructor of a Bible school and we had had our first child. Having been there for the better part of two years, God opened a door for us to move and minister in South Africa – four months before the historic election of Nelson Mandela. The media predictions were for blood in the streets and even civil war. But God spoke to our hearts and told us that “they can march us to the borders with guns at our backs, having taken everything that we have, but not one hair on our heads would be touched.” With that promise we moved south to be a part of one of the most amazing, sovereignly-oversighted events – the election of an unjustly accused and incarcerated black man who became president of the Republic of South Africa.

It wasn’t arduous, fretful or frightening. We knew we were in God’s will; He had given us His word. In the same way, the missionaries that we support, individually and as a church, are in the field because God has called them; they have obeyed and they have His Word to back them up.

You, too, are called. Called to preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season (2 Tim 4:2). Called to teach your children when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up (Deuteronomy 6:7). Called to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth(Acts 1:8). To sit on your salvation is not why the gift was given. Christ’s sacrifice was to fulfill the will and the word of the Father; and the same holds true for each one of us.

One of the great places to preach, teach and witness the love of God is with His children. Jesus reminded Peter of the importance of the children when He specifically directed him to “Feed my lambs” (John 21:15). You, too, can follow in the footsteps of great men and women of God by starting right here in “Jerusalem”; here at KPC; here in Family ministries. A great way to grow in your faith and understanding of God’s Word is honing it down to its simplest form for our youngest or sharing your lifelong journey and understanding with our school- aged children and youth.

There is a place of active and rewarding ministry right here in our midst, in need of your love for God and His word by sharing it with others. And isn’t that what the gospel is all about?
